Model Overview

The Omoda 9 is a D-segment plug-in hybrid flagship SUV from Chery Group's OMODA brand, known in China as the Exeed Yaoguang C-DM. The new model made its global debut in May 2025 and subsequently went on sale across markets such as Italy, the UK, and Australia. As of May 2026, the vehicle is available in multiple markets across Europe, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, with starting prices of €51,900 (approx. RM423,900) in Italy, £44,990 in the UK, AUD 61,990 (excluding on-the-road costs) in Australia, and RM208,800 in Malaysia (initially CBU fully imported and limited to 50 units before transitioning to CKD local assembly). In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,671 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,800–2,815 mm in a five-seater layout. Positioned as OMODA's flagship offering, the Omoda 9 targets the mid-to-high-end SUV segment with a high-performance PHEV powertrain, long all-electric range, and generous tech equipment, locking horns with rivals such as the BYD Sealion 7, Skoda Kodiaq iV, Mazda CX-60, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Design Language

The exterior of the Omoda 9 is styled around the "0.618 golden ratio of visual harmony". Up front, it features a bold borderless diamond-matrix grille flanked by full-width LED daytime running lights and split matrix LED headlamps, complemented by vertical air vents on the bumper edges for an avant-garde and distinctive look. The side profile embraces a sleek fastback coupe-SUV silhouette, accentuated by flush pop-out door handles and a sharp character line running front to rear, while the rear gets full-width LED tail lights and a sporty quad exhaust finisher setup. 20-inch dual-tone alloy wheels come fitted as standard across the range.

Inside, the cabin is anchored by a dual 12.3-inch curved twin-screen setup. The dashboard features a wraparound architecture generously trimmed in soft-touch surfaces, Nappa leather, and metallic accents to elevate perceived quality. Seat adjustment switches are mounted on the door panels, paired with a rotary gear selector and a dedicated drive-mode toggle. Overall, the interior delivers a flagship-level ambience, with its build quality, material choices, and attention to detail earning praise across multiple international automotive reviews.

Powertrain and Performance

The Omoda 9 comes standard across the range with the "SHS Super Hybrid System" in a tri-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) layout (front + rear electric motors). The plug-in hybrid system pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine with three electric motors via a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (3DHT). The combustion engine pushes out 115 kW (approx. 156 PS/hp) and 220 Nm of torque, while total system output stands at 340–395 kW (approx. 537 PS/hp) and 700 Nm of torque. This enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds, onwards to a top speed of 180–200 km/h.

Providing energy is a 34.46 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, delivering a pure electric range of 145 km on the WLTP cycle and a combined fuel consumption of roughly 1.7 L/100 km under WLTC testing. Total WLTP cruising range exceeds 1,100 km. On the charging front, DC fast charging is supported up to 70 kW, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% state of charge in 25 minutes. In selected markets such as Malaysia, a pure petrol variant is also offered, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit developing 261 PS (approx. 192 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission in either FWD or AWD configurations.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinning the SUV is a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup alongside the tri-motor AWD system. The chassis setup leans heavily towards comfort, bolstered by Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension with selectable drive modes. In Normal mode, the pliant setup soaks up minor road imperfections during city driving effectively, though vertical body bounce becomes more perceptible over rougher tarmac or undulating surfaces. In Sport mode, the adaptive dampers firm up to enhance body control, though dynamic cornering characteristics still prioritize ride comfort over sharp agility. Aided by the standard rear-biased electric AWD and a kerb weight of around 2.2 tonnes, high-speed highway cruising stability remains solid.

Cabin and Features

The Omoda 9 is equipped with a digital cockpit featuring dual 12.3-inch curved screens, complete with a standard 360-degree surround-view monitor and a 540-degree transparent chassis display. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, full-scenario voice commands, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Audiophiles get a 14-speaker Sony premium sound system on higher-spec variants, including driver headrest-integrated speakers for private phone calls. Creature comforts comprise ventilated and heated front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, and a Head-Up Display (HUD). The seats are upholstered in premium Nappa leather with power adjustability up front. Boot space is rated at around 660 litres in standard guise, expandable via split-folding rear seats. Drivers can also choose from 9 selectable drive modes to suit varied driving conditions.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

In terms of crash safety, the Omoda 9 has bagged dual five-star safety ratings from both Australasian ANCAP and Euro NCAP. In the ANCAP assessments, it scored 90% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 81% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 82% for Safety Assist. On the active safety front, an extensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite comes standard, featuring multi-scenario Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB covering vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, junction, and reversing scenarios), Lane Support System (LSS with Lane Keeping Assist - LKA, Lane Departure Warning - LDW, and Emergency Lane Keeping - ELK), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Speed Assistance System (SAS), and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Passive safety is well covered with up to nine airbags fitted as standard, comprising dual front airbags, front side thorax airbags, full-length curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a front centre airbag.

Market Performance and Reviews

Since its global rollout, market expansion for the Omoda 9 has progressed steadily. Following its European premiere in May 2025, order books opened swiftly with localised retail networks rolling out across core markets including Italy and Germany. In Australia, its competitive price tag of AUD 61,990 (before on-road costs) backed by a 7-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty and 8-year battery warranty sees it going head-to-head against rival PHEVs such as the Mazda CX-60 and BYD Sealion 6. In Malaysia, it made its debut as a fully imported (CBU) launch edition priced at RM208,800, with plans to shift to local assembly (CKD) moving forward.

Market reception and user reviews have been somewhat mixed. Praises are largely directed at its punchy 500-plus-horsepower PHEV powertrain, remarkable total range of over 1,000 km, and generous list of comfort and tech amenities. Conversely, criticisms highlighted by owners and auto journalists alike include a suspension setup that lacks refined damping, noticeable body float and low-speed jitters over rough roads, somewhat convoluted infotainment sub-menus, scratchy plastics in certain cabin areas, and relatively flat front seat contours. Overall, as the flagship model spearheading the OMODA brand, the Omoda 9 makes a compelling statement in the global mid-to-high-end SUV segment courtesy of its potent hybrid muscle and extensive equipment list.
